Photoaging: causes, effects and treatments

photoaging

When you go outside, make sure they wear sunscreen to protect themselves from the summer sun. But UV rays aren't the only type of light people need to worry about, and sunscreen isn't the only tool that can help them. Especially in our climate, seeking a more vibrant, youthful glow needs to protect yourself and reverse photoaging.

WHAT IS PHOTOAGING?

Photoaging is the aging effect that light damage has on the skin. Mild damage to skin cells can cause:

  • hyperpigmentation
  • Deeper lines and wrinkles
  • dehydrated skin
  • Bags and dark circles in the eyes
  • Sunburn, irritation and redness

Each of these makes the skin appear older than it is. For skin to look young and vibrant, photoaging must be prevented and treated.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF PHOTOAGING?

Some types of light, such as UV rays, are more damaging to the skin than others. These types of light have higher energy, penetrate the skin and split molecules to form free radicals, which are highly reactive species that damage cells and make skin look older.

Photoaging isn't just caused by UVA and UVB rays, which are considered the usual culprits. A growing body of research has shown that high-energy visible (HEV) light, or blue light, is another major contributor to photoaging. HEV light is commonly emitted by digital displays, such as phones and laptops, as well as the sun.

With more time outdoors, patients are more susceptible to all of these sources of photoaging, especially during the summer months.

HOW CAN PHOTOAGING BE PREVENTED AND TREATED?

While sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays, SPF is really just the beginning of healthy, youthful-looking skin. To truly look and feel younger, patients must go beyond sunscreen to protect themselves and reverse the photoaging effects of harmful UVA, UVB and HEV light.

We strongly recommend three ingredients to help your patients prevent and reverse photoaging for younger, glowing skin: Vitamin C, Chromabright®, and Winter Cherry.

VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant and a skin nutrient. Antioxidants like vitamin C eliminate free radicals; that is, they neutralize and eliminate free radicals before damage is done. In fact, vitamin C has been shown to have protective properties against harmful ultraviolet light.

As a nutrient, vitamin C helps skin cells stay healthy and, in particular, can help them regulate pigment levels. It is one of the best ingredients to brighten the skin, preventing and reversing hyperpigmentation. Vitamin C helps maintain healthy cells for a youthful glow.

We recommend these products that contain vitamin C for our climate: Stem Cell Serum , Vita C Moisture Spray and Vitamin C.

CHROMABRIGHT®

Chromabright® is a cutting-edge ingredient that corrects and evens skin tone. It's a strong brightener, fading dark spots and brightening dull, discolored skin for a healthy glow.

Chromabright® increases skin radiance and greatly reduces hyperpigmentation by evening out skin tone. It has also been shown to protect against UVA and UVB light, and is an excellent complement to sunscreen to prevent and reverse photoaging.

We recommend these products containing Chromabright® for use in the summer: Ultra Moisture Day night Creme , 360 Firming Eye Gel and Lip Boost .

WINTER CHERRY

Like vitamin C, winter cherry is an antioxidant that scavenges free radicals and protects against harmful light. It is a particularly effective protection against HEV light. Winter Cherry revitalizes and rejuvenates the skin and helps cells regulate pigmentation and repair mechanisms, reducing hyperpigmentation.

Winter cherry is one of the best active ingredients to prevent photoaging, partly because of the depth with which it is absorbed into the skin. Prevents and reverses damage from harmful light from the surface down to the cell layers of the dermis for completely healthy and protected skin.

Recommend these products containing winter cherries to your patients this summer: HA Boost Serum , Ultra Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 40 , and Intensive Neck, Hand & Chest Revitalize.
