The Science Behind Medical-Grade Moisturizers

The Science Behind Medical-Grade Moisturizers
Dermoeffects moisturizing creams do more than just improve skin hydration. Instead, they reinforce a healthy skin barrier, preventing water loss and improving firmness.

WHAT IS THE SKIN BARRIER?

The outer layers of the skin are made up of corneocytes and a lipid bilayer in a brick-and-mortar architecture. Corneocytes are like bricks that store water; lipids are like a mortar that holds corneocytes together, preventing water from leaking out. When we talk about the skin barrier, we mean this "wall" that retains moisture.

Particularly as the skin ages, the skin barrier can lose its structure. With less organization, it becomes less dense and the corneocytes are further separated, making it easier for water to escape, like a wall where the bricks stretch further and further, the barrier is broken. This makes it harder for irritated or aging skin to stay hydrated.

HYDRATION AND DRYNESS

It's simple: healthy skin requires a healthy skin barrier.

If the skin barrier stays strong, the skin will stay hydrated. Properly hydrated skin is firmer and denser, helping to eliminate lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, and it becomes brighter and feels smoother.

If the barrier is weak, on the other hand, the skin will look dry, dull, rough, and clammy, and it will become more prone to the visible signs of aging, like lines and wrinkles.

The environment plays an important role in skin health. During the winter, for example, the air is drier both inside and outside, which makes the skin lose moisture more easily and deteriorate. A lot of HEV light from screens and artificial lighting can also damage the skin barrier.

THE ROLE OF MOISTURIZERS

Skin care products can be applied to help preserve the strength, function and density of the skin's corneocytes and lipid bilayer, counteracting these environmental challenges and reinforcing the barrier to keep skin hydrated and vibrant.

Here are a few examples of how our medical grade moisturizers can do just that:

Vitamins – Vitamins can have powerful moisturizing properties for the skin, especially by promoting collagen production. Vitamin A, as in our Intensive Night Crème, and Vitamin C, as in Vitamin C or Vita C Moisture Spray, increase the rate at which new skin grows. This healthy, youthful skin increases the firmness of the skin layer, helping it to retain more moisture.
Peptides – The pentapeptides in our best-selling Ultra Moisture Day Night Creme similarly stimulate collagen production, improve skin firmness, and strengthen the skin barrier for improved hydration.
Lipids : Vita Protect Skinc contains bioidentical lipids that add to the lipid bilayer. This prevents water from slipping into the cracks of dry skin, providing intense hydration.
Exfoliants – Exfoliants like glycolic acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid found in our upcoming Moisture Crème, remove dead corneocytes from the skin's surface and promote the growth of healthy, youthful cells. These new cells are denser to form a more compact skin barrier, which improves skin hydration.
There are a number of ways to keep your skin hydrated and healthy, and the best moisturizing product for you will vary based on your needs. Ultimately, all of our medical grade moisturizers work by strengthening the skin's barrier to help retain water for brighter, more beautiful skin.
